In this Scratch Game Jam, participants will be tasked with creating games that challenge players to overcome a world that is actively working against them. Whether it’s natural disasters, hostile environments, societal norms, or oppressive systems, the games created for this Game Jam will require players to think creatively and strategically in order to succeed. The theme of “The World is Against You” is a powerful one that has been explored in many different types of games over the years. From survival games like “This War of Mine” and “Don’t Starve”, to dystopian simulations like “Papers, Please”, there are countless ways to interpret this theme and create engaging and thought-provoking games.
Game ideas
In “This War of Mine”, players take on the role of civilians trying to survive in a war-torn city. Resources are scarce, danger is everywhere, and the world seems to be actively trying to kill you at every turn. In order to survive, players must make tough decisions and work together to scavenge for supplies, build shelter, and protect themselves from danger.
Similarly, “Don’t Starve” drops players into a randomly generated wilderness with no resources or shelter. As they try to survive, they’ll encounter hostile creatures, unpredictable weather, and other obstacles that make it clear the world is not on their side. In order to survive, players must gather resources, build shelter, and craft tools and weapons to defend themselves.
In “Papers, Please”, players take on the role of a border control officer in a totalitarian state. They must navigate complex rules and regulations, while also dealing with the moral implications of their job and the oppressive system they’re a part of. As they process more and more people, they’ll encounter increasingly difficult decisions and ethical dilemmas that force them to question their role in the system.
These are just a few examples of the types of games that could be created for this Game Jam. We’re excited to see what creative and challenging ideas our participants come up with, and we can’t wait to see how they tackle the theme of “The World is Against You”. Whether you’re a seasoned game developer or a newcomer, we encourage you to participate and showcase your skills and creativity.
Please note that the deadline for submissions is July 28rd. Good luck, and have fun!
