Interview Content
brokenstrings: Can you introduce yourself?
kaplin86: I am kaplin86 and i am kaplin86 alongside being kaplin86 and i like to code but dont trust me to fniish everything.
brokenstrings: I noticed you started using Scratch five years ago. What first got you interested in Scratch? What motivates you to keep using it?
kaplin86: I got interested in scratch due to a little thing called a "Kano computer kit". It had a similar block-like coding system and such. A friend of mine was using scratch and saw the kano, and told me about scratch due to the similar programming nature.
brokenstrings: Besides Scratch programming, do you have any other hobbies or interests?
kaplin86: Game design is been a bit of a passion for me. Recently ive delved into godot and its honestly really good for people who want to possibly step up from gandi.
brokenstrings: Throughout your years of creating, what event has given you the greatest sense of accomplishment?
kaplin86: In no particular order: Ghost hunter (scratch), Data driven detective (Gandi), Great tofu war (Gandi), Untitled gun game (scratch), and Block and bot's quest of rebels
brokenstrings: As a prolific creator, where do you get your inspiration from?
kaplin86: My first ever project on scratch was a undertale themed one. Ive always loved undertale and deltarune and try to make things of similar story. I also have themed stuff off of current hyperfixations, most of which being the Cookierun franchise and pizza tower.
brokenstrings: What are your signature creations? Which one are you most satisfied with and why?
kaplin86: Data driven detective, mostly because its my epitome of quality.
brokenstrings: You’ve participated in 11 Scratch Game Jams, continuously from the 4th to the 14th. That’s incredible! How did you manage to stay committed?
kaplin86: Boredom. I dont have much else to say. Felt like i had something to do.
brokenstrings: It seems participating in SGJ helps a lot with relieving boredom. Many people struggle to participate in more than two jams and have trouble submitting their projects on time. Do you have any tips for managing time effectively?
kaplin86: I am NOT the person to be questioned for tips on managing time, I near-always post my project in the final hours of the jam. I guess just keep working and working. Dont let things like youtube shorts drag you down. Typically when i make my projects, i get a lot of work done in the first couple of days, practically forget about it, then on week 2 i remember its existance and think to myself "It would have been a waste of time to not finish this", and then i finish it in record time.
brokenstrings: You have great interactions with many users in the Gandi community. Are there any users you think are outstanding? Would you like to talk about them?
kaplin86: Putera is such a chill dude. I love his artstyle, and it feels like we are so similar with our creations. Exotic and X_infinite are pretty cool, we played some games together in the past (Bopl battle, upgun, roblox dingus). And finally the tofu team (excluding exotic and me: Batidude, sava, and reborn light), they were just so nice to work with, especially after "the great tofu split".
brokenstrings: You’ve been part of the Gandi community for over a year now. Besides the Scratch Game Jam, what aspects of Gandi IDE attract you? What improvements would you like to see in the future?
kaplin86: AI extension. For an improvement, i would love to make some sort of extension, but it isnt very clear on where to start, nor could i ever find a tutorial on how.
brokenstrings: Is there anything else you’d like to say to the community members?
kaplin86: keep working. heres some quotes i like:
"Procrastination is the theif of time" - Edward young
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because in the end those who matter dont mind and those who mind dont matter" - Dr seuss
"We keep moving forward, opening up new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious... and curiousity keeps us moving down new paths" - Walt disney
"yo u can use all except batitued. hes canoically dead" - exotic
